Background / History of the Department
Livestock is a rising sector as its contribution to the national economy is growing continuously. Apart from this livestock is an active employer of thousands of landless poor, subsistence and semi- subsistence small farmer families. In short, livestock and its products are directly linked to the economy of small and medium-sized farmers. It is a major source of active food and adds significantly to the health, nutrition, and wellbeing of rural as well as urban consumers. In a country like Pakistan, data regarding livestock is not readily available and is mostly scattered. Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Punjab is rendering different services to the Livestock sector of the province through its infrastructure network in the field. The Livestock and Dairy Development Department / Animal Husbandry functioning at District level in District Rahim Yar Khan since 1956.
Functions
Animal Health and Extension Services
The primary responsibilities carried out within this section include:

Revamping of Extension Services and Capacity Building:
- Implementation of Kissan Livestock Baithak programs to enhance extension services and build the capacity of livestock farmers.

Redressal of Public Complaints:
- Addressing public complaints regarding service delivery through a 24/7 toll-free helpline at 08000-9211.

Research and Training for Livestock Production:
- Taking various measures to boost livestock production, such as:
- Large-scale production of high-quality biologics for controlling infectious diseases in livestock and poultry.
- Conducting research studies in the fields of animal health and biologics production.
- Investigating prevailing and emerging diseases in livestock and poultry.
- Developing and standardizing modern techniques for researching and producing biologics, with a focus on improving their quality.
- Providing training to in-service veterinarians, para-veterinary staff, post-graduate students, and graduate internees from veterinary and other universities in Punjab.
- Conducting training sessions for farmers to familiarize them with livestock health issues and vaccination schedules.
- Taking various measures to boost livestock production, such as:

Preservation and Development of Livestock Genetic Resources:
- Initiatives aimed at preserving and developing the genetic resources of livestock.

Livestock Production at Government Livestock Farms:
- Implementation of strategies to enhance livestock production at government livestock farms.
